ABC's of Kindergarten

 

A: Arrive on time 8:22 a.m.  Three tardies equals one absence, yikes!  Absences can be excused by calling (310)452-2364 ext.67335 or emailing at alavin@smmusd.org

B: Birthdays - we celebrate them, but not with sweets.  You may purchase a healthy snack for the entire class on your child’s birthday. However, ALL food must be store bought and brought in original packaging.

C: Communication.  It is key.  Let me know if there us any changes in your home life.

D: Dismissal – Meet us at the 14th street gate at 1:45 p.m.  Please be punctual!

Raining - Dismissal will be at the gate next to office.

E: Eat well - Make sure your child has a healthy breakfast before school and pack nutritious snacks and lunches!

F: Fresh fruits and vegetables - Eat 5 a day!

G: Games – Please leave games and toys at home.  Home toys become a distraction at school.  They can get lost or broken. 

H: Homework – Homework will be sent Monday and needs to be returned on Thursday.  Journal, reading bag and books need to returned on a weekly basis.

I: Illness - Keep emergency contact numbers updated, and keep your child at home until fully recovered from illnesses.

J: Jackets - Put names in jackets and make sure your child brings one when the weather is cold.

K: Kindergarten - It is an exciting year for all of us.  Let's work together to make it AMAZING!

L: Lunch – Children can bring lunch from home or purchase lunch at school.  Money can be deposited in to their account a http://www.smmusd.org/foodservices/ 

Make sure lunch boxes and lunches have your child’s name on them (peanuts/nuts free).

M: Medication - Send medications and doctor’s orders to the nurse.  Do not send medication in your child's backpack.

N: News -  If your child has any important news please share it with me.  Not only will this help with learning but it will help me to connect with your children as people. 

O: Only 5 minutes - Time outs should last as long as your child’s age.

P: Pack - Pack extra clothing in case of accidents.

Q: Questions – Please ask questions.  I will do my best to get them answered.  But remember, parents can also be a great source of information.

R: Rest - Make sure your child gets plenty of rest.

S: Shoes - Close toe shoes only.  Send your child to school in shoes that are safe for playing on the yard.  No sandals!

T: Transportation - Let me know in writing if someone else is taking your child home from school.

U: Unfinished Work.  We will have lots of this.  Please finish it up at home and send back if you wish. 

V: Volunteers.  We love them!  But please give us a few weeks to get our routines down and rapport with the students.  Before volunteering, you must attend volunteer training and get a TB test.

W: Wednesday folders - Please read them every Wednesday, and send back any responses on Thursdays.

X: Xtra attention - After a long day at school, your child will be ready for lots of extra attention at night.

Y: Your help is needed!  Please do homework each night, read each everyday, and clean out backpacks daily! 

Z: ZZZZ’s.  Kids need lots of sleep.  Expect them to be tired at the end of the day – they work hard in school and it takes awhile to get used to.  5 - 6 year olds need 10 - 13 hours of sleep daily!!
